Princess Anne is touring Rome when she decides she's tired of the structured life of royalty. When she slips out on her own she meets up with a fiesty American reporter who thinks he has the scoop of the century -- until he falls in love with her.

British singer Harriet Green (Jessie Matthews) is immensely popular. Unfortunately, the single star also has a career-damaging secret -- she has a baby girl. When Harriet receives blackmail threats, she relocates with her infant to South Africa. Decades later, a woman nearly identical to Harriet appears in London, but it's really her daughter, Harriet Hawkes (also Matthews). This younger Harriet begins to pass herself off as her ageless mother, leading to complications, romantic and otherwise.
