A circus' beautiful trapeze artist agrees to marry the leader of side-show performers, but his deformed friends discover she is only marrying him for his inheritance.

In 15th century France, Francois is a patriot and carouser. After he insults the Duke of Burgundy he's banished from Paris. When the Duke plans to have an associate marry the king's ward, Francois stops it but is sentenced to death. Then he exploits the king's superstitious nature to give him a reprieve.
