Godard stars as an eccentric filmmaker in this fragmentary love poem from his 1980s period. Loosely based on Bizet’s opera, First Name: Carmen reinvents cinema into elliptical broken rhythms and passages of poetry to renew one of the oldest of tales: that of two lovers on the run.

Born out of wedlock early in the last century, impoverished and unloved Violette Leduc (Emmanuelle Devos, Coco Before Chanel) meets Simone de Beauvoir (Sandrine Kiberlain, The Apartment) in post war Saint-Germaindes-Pres. An intense lifelong relationship develops between the two women authors, based on Violette’s quest for freedom through writing and on Simone’s conviction that she holds in her hands the destiny of an extraordinary writer.
