In the early '80s, Norway experiences an oil boom the likes of which would forever alter its financial future. Enormous oil and gas deposits are discovered in the North Sea and the authorities aim to bring the oil ashore through a pipeline from depths of 500 metres. Two brothers and professional divers, Petter and Knut, are chosen by the Norwegian government and their American backers to go on the dangerous mission to lay the pipe. But a sudden, tragic accident sees Petter being sent on a perilous journey where he loses sight of who is pulling the strings. Gradually he realises that he is in way over his head.
