A married man is a habitual womaniser who won't even refrain from pursuing other married women. His extra-marital affairs cause him much pain till he finally realises his errs and returns to his wife.

True to it's title - which means three knots - the story revolves around three characters and the unexpected happenings in their lives.

Sivayya (Kamal Haasan), an autistic person, is only good at obeying what his grandmother says. A widow (Raadhika) and her son enter his life and in attempt to do them good, Sivayya marries her during an auspicious village festival. How he earns his living and courageously fights the social conventions and injustice forms the plot of Swathi Mutyam.
