In his last appearance, Lon Chaney, Jr. stars as one of the screen's most memorable movie monsters: the mummy Kharis from ancient Egypt, who is tormented by his forbidden love for princess Ananka. The trouble begins when mummy Kharis is recovered and transported to Cajun country for study by a bunch of prodding archaeologists.

The sleuths investigate a series of grisly murders in a small Canadian village called La Mort Rouge during the Second World War. The villagers believe the deaths are the work of a phantom, according to an old legend, and they see things which support this. Holmes and Watson have to prove otherwise, and stop the killer.
