Slack Bay
(2016)No one’s enjoying Dumont’s foray into comedy more than us. The former king of New French Extremity has proven to take slapstick like a duck to water with this darkly twisted, hysterically funny whodunnit meets class satire. Plus—to close our devoted tribute—Binoche like you’ve never seen her before.

Moliere
(2007)In the tradition of Shakespeare in Love, Moliere invents a fanciful yarn based on speculative historical fiction taken from a piece of real life -- in this case, the mysterious disappearance of the French playwright for several months in 1644 -- and concocts a thoroughly irresistible and lavish story of intrigue, romance, comedy and artistic inspiration. As Moliere, the magnetic Romain Duris displays all of his usual seductive intensity, but also pulls off goofy Gallic charm. There's something of a modern rock star to him, almost a cousin to Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow. In addition there's a superb cast of actors, and visually viewers are taken on a sumptuous, wild ride through Versailles-era France. This absorbing romp has an infectious sense of fun that lingers well after the curtain falls.

Immoral Tales
(1974)Although it has much in common with Walerian Borowczyk’s earlier work, Immoral Tales marks the point where his reputation as an arty pornographer began, and was sexually explicit enough to have caused problems with the censors on its original UK release. It tells four stories revolving around particular taboos (virginity, female masturbation, bloodlust, incest), each delving further back in time, as if to suggest that the same issues recur constantly throughout human history and in all walks of life, whether it’s Lucrezia Borgia (Florence Bellamy) or Erzsébet Báthory (Paloma Picasso in her only screen role) or the anonymous teenagers of the earlier episodes. This high-definition restoration by Argos Films is being released on Blu-ray with English subtitles for the first time. The film is presented in its original five-part conception, including the short film The True Story of the Beast of Gévaudan that was later expanded into Borowczyk’s later feature The Beast.
