Nanjing, China 1937. Japanese forces invade this once-capital of the Republic of China on December 9th. Throughout the following 6 weeks, soldiers raped thousands of women and annihilated hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians - with mass executions and victims digging their own graves. Few events carry the ugly and sickening connotations of what has become known as the 'Rape of Nanking'.

Liu Xing (Liu Ye) is a humble but brilliant Chinese student who arrives at Valley State University and makes a bumpy transition into American life with the help and support of wealthy university patron, Joanna Silver (Meryl Streep). Before long, Xing joins a select cosmology group under the direction of his hero, the famous cosmologist Professor Jacob Reiser (Aidan Quinn). The group is working to create a model of the origins of the universe and Xing's enormous talent leads him quickly to become Reiser's protege. But when Xing's obsession with the study of dark matter challenges Prof. Reiser's work, Xing finds his bright future in science shattered. Unable to bear the indignation, Xing returns to campus with a loaded gun.
