As WWII rages on, a group of Australian nurses and nuns endure captivity under Japanese forces, facing survival and the struggle for forgiveness.

The story is about Iris' rise to the apex of a love/power triangle that includes McHeath, her roguish English lover, and Art, an earnest young boxer. Within the flawed moral landscape, each character struggles to establish his or her sovereignty.
